Our Befriending Service

Due to capacity, gaddum befriending service is currently not accepting new referrals until further notice.

Our befriending service aims to reduce the social isolation that may result from getting older. Factors can include a decreasing circle of family and friends; reduced mobility; and a loss of confidence in going out alone.

A befriender coming to visit regularly, to enjoy a cup of tea and to chat together, or perhaps doing an activity together based on shared interests, can help to lift an individual’s mood and bring their sense of confidence back. The befriender would visit regularly for at least two hours a fortnight, and the person befriended and the person volunteering would decide between themselves when they would meet and what they would do during the visit. Volunteer Befriending

Befriending an older person who is socially isolated can be really satisfying and have a number of benefits. You will know that your visits and companionship are making a positive difference to someone’s life; it may help to develop your skills, increase your confidence and will provide invaluable experience.

You would need to be able to offer a minimum of two hours a fortnight, ideally for a minimum of 6 months as the friendship is intended to be medium to long term. We would ask for the names and contact details of two referees and would carry out a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service – replacement of the CRB) check. We would provide appropriate induction training, introduce you to someone you would enjoy visiting, provide on-going support and supervision, and out-of-pocket expenses.

If you think becoming a befriender would interest you, or you would like to befriend someone in need, please don’t hesitate to contact Helen – our befriending co-ordinator.

What is Advocacy?
My befriender gives me new life, she gives me a reason to get out of bed on ‘down’ days, & she lets me know things are happening in the outside world when I sometimes don’t see anyone else for weeks/
